Each August, the Chatham Islands host the unique and inspiring Festival of Science, a week-long celebration of discovery, storytelling, and the natural wonders of these remote islands. Running from 10–17 August 2026, the festival brings together scientists, astronomers, conservationists, and curious minds for evening talks, stargazing sessions, and hands-on community activities.
This year’s theme explores everything from deep sea life and volcanic ash to native bees and dark skies, offering visitors a chance to learn about the Chathams’ rare ecosystems and fascinating history. With almost no light pollution, the islands are one of the best places in the world for stargazing, making this a magical time to visit.
Many of our guided tours during the festival period include opportunities to attend events and explore the science shaping this special part of Aotearoa. Whether you’re a nature lover, a stargazer, or simply curious, it’s the perfect time to experience the Chathams.
